Julie Garwood was the very first romance author I ever read. Her Highlanders are still my all time favorites. Her Historicals top my Keeper Shelf. Brodick has always bee the favorite. Since I am only 5'3", tall isn't a necessary quality. Both my daughters married men over 6' and someone that tall just wouldn't work. Since THE BEAUTY AND THE BEAST is my favorite story line, handsome isn't up there either. It helps, but it is more important that he be a man of hornor and caring. That said, give me those tall, dark, and handsome Highlanders any day. I like the sound of your books and look forward to reading them.

My all-time favorite romance hero is Jamie Fraser from the Outlander series. No hero compares to that hot Scot. :) Though I sure do love your heroes, Monica. You write the sexiest Alphas!

For the Love of Betas by Kate Noble

Congratulations to Vicky, winner of Kate's giveaway!  Vicky--send me (elevine@romconinc.com) your contact information so that I can put you in touch with Kate.  Thanks to everyone for visiting and come back often!

--Elaine

This is a transcript of my memory of a conversation I had with my non-romance reading friend, whom I’m going to call Erica (because that’s not her real name or anything.  Not at all.) We had just gotten out of the movie (500) Days of Summer starring the beyond awesome Joseph Gordon-Levitt at his beta best.

It goes like this:

Erica:  OMG!  Why can’t Mike be like that?

(Mike, it should be noted, is Erica’s boyfriend.  Or was at the time.  Also, yes, Erica talks in textspeak.)

Me:  Like what?

Erica:  Like kind and smart and funny.  Mike’s not funny.  He doesn’t know how to take a joke.  Joseph Gordon Levitt can take a joke.

Me: (under breath) That’s because Mike’s an assho—

Erica:  What did you say?

Me:  Uh… I said that, in the movie, Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s a beta.

Erica:  A what?

Me:  A beta.  You know, a beta hero.

Erica: *looks at me blankly*

Me:  There are the alpha heroes – the guy who kicks down doors and stomps around his feelings instead of dealing with them, all while leading battalions into war.

Erica:  Oh!  That’s definitely Mike.  He was president of his frat in college.

Me:  … Sure.  And then, there are beta heroes.  They tend to be a little kinder and gentler.  More willing to crack a joke and do the dishes.  Listen when you talk.  He may not understand what you’re talking about, but he’ll try.

Erica:  But I don’t usually go for those kind of guys.  Aren’t they a little… wussy?

Me:  I dunno.  Do you consider Jim from The Office wussy?

Erica:  Oh!     I                   looooooovvvveeeeee him!

Me:  How about Marcus Worth from my book Revealed?

Erica:  But he wasn’t wussy!  He was a spy!

Me:  And yet a total beta.  What about Mr. Knightley from Jane Austen’s Emma?

Erica:  *pretends to faints dead away*  Ok, ok, so Betas are good and Alphas are bad?

Me:  Not necessarily.  There are great alpha characters and great beta characters.  But for my money, and especially when I have to write a hero, I tend to lean towards the beta.

Erica:  Why?

Me:  Because when I have to spend a year with a guy (which is about how long it takes me to write a book start to finish) I want it to be someone I can talk to, relate to.  Who has a sense of humor about themselves, no matter how dire the circumstances.  Because a guy who will listen to and respect another’s opinion, who will be a partner to my heroine instead of a conqueror… that’s the best fantasy.

I’m very pleased to be able to give away a copy of Revealed to one lucky commenter.  (Erica, not you.  You already have one.  I know because I gave it to you.)  I’m dying to know what you love about Betas, and Alphas.  In fact, what kind of hero is your favorite?

Kate Noble loves books.  Romances especially.  But, being born into a family of doctors, scientists, and mathematicians, she didn’t discover she was adept at writing until, oh, about junior year of high school.  Which came as something of a relief, as she was hopeless at memorizing the Latin names for all the bones in the human body.  The Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle eludes her to this day.

She is the author of the national bestselling Compromised and Revealed.  Her next novel, The Summer of You, will be released in Spring 2010.

Hmm... this isn't a cop-out answer. I love them both. How the author handles them is the real trick to writing amazing characters. If he comes off the page for me and isn't a jerk (fundamentally, not that he wouldn't do a stupid thing or two, after all, he's only human), I probably like him. To make me really love a hero thought? That's got to be just plain magic...

Interesting post. Most blogs are always singing the praises of the Alpha. It is nice to see some nice things about the Betas. They are both good hero types. The Alphas are intimidating, larger than life and take a bit more handling to get them to cooperate and see things the heroine's way. They know they are right, so don't get in their way. The Betas are not so overpowering. They listen. But they are not wimps and can be counted on to save the day. They might even tell you what is going on and how you can help rather than be the big macho hero intent on pushing the little lady out of the way and doing it all himself. The Alpha's have their appeal, but I prefer the partnership a Beta offers.

I also have a friend who talks in textspeak. I'm twenty-five years older than she is so really have to try and keep up! Love the post and love Elaines comment on loving the blend. I agree. I'm married to a blend, although I have to admit he's more Alpha than Beta. Oh well. Love him anyway.

Married an alpha first, Lost myself in the process. Very hard to be married to one, without risking ones self worth. To glow in their afterglow so to speak...Now married to a beta who reminds me how important I am to him and that he would not be where he is without me. Ahhh true love..

Hi Kate! Great post, and thanks for clarifying the betas. However, I LOVE reading about alphas. I think it's because the men in my life (husband, dad, stepdad) are betas, so when I want to escape into a book it's with types I would not normally associate with everyday. BUT, I will not put a good book down if the hero is a beta man!

I am totally married to a beta so it's all good!! Granted in High School I always wanted the Alphas...but then again who didn't!!! Thanks for the post.

Hey, Kate! Welcome to RomCon! Your post is hilarious - I have a friend who talks in text speak also ("OMG, T! U R my BFF 4ever!"). Sometimes I feel like I'm stuck in a bad Valley Girl movie (that's what text speak reminds me of. Must be the "OMG's".) I love to read both alphas and betas, but it's the betas that often stick around in my brain... and ok, it's usually the betas that pop up in my dreams (pardon that pun, hehehe)! Enjoyed your books too! Hope you enjoy your visit! ~ Tiffany

Good morning everyone! (I say good morning because I'm a west coaster.) Very happy to be here. I have a soft spot for certain alphas (Mr. Darcy comes to mind) but I love me my betas. And Michele I think you're absolutely right that I'd much rather be a woman today than a man -- we can kick butt, take names and still watch a sappy movie if we want to. Guys don't have that option.

I have to admit the Alpha man is my pick. He is the born hero. The savior to the weak and downtrodden. He's strong, athletic, intelligent, usually a loner (but we can change that) and most of the time he is very attractive. Yes, the beta guy might be a good choice to go to the movies with, but if a terrorist attacks while you are there you will need MR. ALPHA.

I enjoy reading about alphas. My favorite types are the anti-hero alphas, that swear they're not heroes. That anything heroic they do is because they want to, not because they're a nice guy. The odd thing is that dh is a beta. He can go all alpha but for the most part is a beta.

I don't necessarily think of betas as wussy, more as non-confrontational. Betas can be the hero in the friends to lovers stories, they're very likable, easy to get to know. Now that I think about it, I like reading about betas too. It just seems like there's more alphas out there than betas. :)

Well, I have to admit that I LOVE to read about alpha men. But when I have to deal with one in real life, Betas are my pick. :) For all the reasons you stated - they listen more, they're funnier, can laugh at life and take a joke. I like alpha boys too, but I think they have a hard time turning the testosterone OFF. Must be hard to be man in today's world. Honestly. I'm glad I'm a woman! LOLOL.
