Well, I guess somebody had to." Hee hee. But you're right. Sometimes bad things happen, & I'm okay with that. I prefer it when they happen to the villain but you know, that's me. I'd have tossed the book into the shredder too if the heroine had died. Or the hero. Or, heck, anybody I like. I'm squeamish like that. :-)

I require a happy ending. Some people may die in the process (shit happens) but by golly, the ending will be happy. I read a book once where the heroine died in the end (shredded said book into the trash bin) and one where the hero was mutilated and subsequently died at the end (thrown hard against the wall, stomped on, thrown into the trash, taken out and thrown in again). Give me an HEA or give me death.

I'm not an exclusive reader of romance either but you're right--it's my best bet for finding a read that meets all my requirements in terms of people I like not getting killed off. :-) Plus I like the inherent optimism. What can I say? I'm a Pollyanna. But I like it.

Where Do You Get Your Ideas? by Rachelle Chase

At social functions, whenever I tell people I write sexy romances, 90% of the folks will always ask (after a long pause), “Where do you get your ideas?”

Since the question is usually accompanied by an ultra-polite smile on most – or a lewd grin on some (mainly men) – I’ve come to the conclusion that what they’re really asking is if I write about my own experiences. And the answer to that one is “no.” Because I write fiction. I deal in fantasies. If I wanted to write about my romantic experiences, I’d write a comedy. Or a horror novel.

But, having to answer that question so often has caused me to think about the answer a little deeper. Because though I’m not writing about me, there is a part of me in every book. And a lot of times, that part of me is connected to where I get my ideas. Because those ideas are sometimes triggered by something that has happened to me.

For example, when I was interviewing firefighters to understand more about their jobs and lives, I walked up to a group of them outside a fire station. Which made me wonder, how would an ultra-feminine, fashion-conscious woman (which I’m not), who was not intimidated by all that testosterone (which I was), feel approaching these men? And, how would they react? That woman became the heroine in “The Firefighter Wears Prada,” my story in MEN ON FIRE.

And then there’s Sharice, my jaded (which I’m not) heroine in SIN CLUB ... Well, I was standing outside a nightclub, waiting for a friend to get her car, when this guy drove by and yelled his phone number out the window and asked me to call him. I’d rolled my eyes, inwardly, and thought, “What woman in her right mind would call some guy who yells his number…” And, in that moment, Sharice was born.

So, saying there’s a part of me in my novels, is like saying there’s a part of an actor in the role (s)he’s playing. Because both the actor and I have to look within and find a way to connect with the fictional character, to get into that character.

So, when you read your favorite romance authors, do you wonder if the author is writing about their own experiences?

It’s been fun exploring this topic here. Thank you for having me as a guest, RomCon!

RomCon Readers: Rachelle is giving away one copy of SIN CLUB and MEN ON FIRE! So let us know if you wonder about your favorite authors...

GSM, Katrina, Jane, thanks for sharing. It's interesting that you all wonder. Now that I'm an author, I wonder if an author is writing about their own experiences when I read a book. But, before I started, I didn't. I just assumed everything was made up. Naïve of me, isn't it? ;)

Tiffany, thanks so much for having me here!

Best,
Rachelle

Sometimes I do wonder how much of the author is in a character. I enjoyed your post. Thanks for visiting.

Hi Rachelle. I've often wondered where authors get their ideas, especially when something seems really unique or interesting. It was great to read how you've gotten some of your ideas! Thanks for sharing!

Hi Rachelle,
I always do wonder if the author is incorporating her own experiences into their work. I have heard of authors who model a character after someone they know so it wouldn't surprise me to learn that they might inject some part of their personal life in their stories.
