Female Friendships In Romance by Jaci Burton

Romance novels typically focus on the relationship between the Hero and the Heroine. But oftentimes there are other dynamics at play. Familial relationships run in the background, mixing in and sometimes causing problems with the relationship between the hero and heroine, and often there are friendships that will either help or hinder the hero and heroine’s road to happily ever after. I love exploring the friendship angle. My heroes will often have friends. So will my heroines. People have friends in real life. Why shouldn’t my characters?

One of the things I’ve enjoyed exploring in some of my books is female friendships. In fact, in two of my contemporary erotic romances—Wild Wicked & Wanton, as well as Bound Branded & Brazen, which released this week, female friendships are at the core of the story. What do female friendships have to do with erotic romances? Well, in my world of erotic romance, it’s not always about the sex.

In Wild Wicked & Wanton, there are three stories about three very good friends—Abby, Blair and Callie. The book centers on these best friends and their journeys. And yes, they are sexual journeys, but I also focus on the friendships of these good friends. How they’re there to support each other through triumphs and sadness, and how sometimes it’s your best friends who will tell you when it’s time to pull up your big girl panties and make some needed changes in your love life. Abby, Blair and Callie are there for each other during the pivotal moments in each other’s lives, which only tightens the bonds of friendship among the three women.

In my newest book, Bound, Branded & Brazen, Valerie, Brea and Jolene McMasters are sisters, but they’re also friends. And as sisters they can be catty and mean to each other. There’s the typical sibling rivalry, but they also have each other’s backs during the worst times in each other’s lives. And isn’t that what friendship is all about? My sister and I can fight like cats and dogs, but always know we can go to each other when things are bad and we’re always there for each other. And no matter who goes wrong in the sisters’ love lives, the three will always stick together. No man will ever tear them apart, and none of them will ever let a man break their sisters’ hearts. But then again, these sisters aren’t above playing a little Cupid, either. They want each other to be happy. That’s what friendship between women is all about, isn’t it? Seeing your best friends getting their happily ever after?

So yes, in a romance the pivotal story is always the hero and heroine, but I love exploring the friendships between females, because after all, where would we be without our best friends to dish about books and clothes and men and everything else that’s on our minds? Friendship, like love, is forever.

Hi Jaci, my sisters fit the "forever" part, but we certainly were not "best friends" for a long time. But now (with age) we'ver all mellowed and we are enjoying our time together much more! And distance does make the times fonder, as we're all spread out across the county/across an ocean (or two)! Thanks for a lovely post... helped me think warmly of my siblings!

Hi Jaci, your books sound interesting. As I read your post I thought about my favorite books and what made them my favorite books, and most of it boiled down to a couple of things one of them being friendships. My favorite Nora Roberts trilogies have been the ones about friends.

I have two best friends

One of my best friend is my sister in law, my husbands older sister. When we met we were able to hit it off immediately because we read the same books. Over the years and the distance (we lived in one state, she in another) we were able to forge a great friendship. Now we do everything together. We have started a business (a bookstore of course) together, we talk at least three times a day, either on the phone or through email, and we spend a lot of time together, without husband and kids. We are even going to Romcon together.

My other best friend is my husband. He is the first person I want to talk to in the morning and the last person I want to talk to at night. We do everything together, minus the stuff I do with his sister.

I am very lucky in my friendships.

Hi Jaci, Congrats on you new book!!! Yeah! I don't have any BFF anymore. My bestest BFF passed away 10 years ago and many of the others have moved away, married and have lives of thier own. My hubby would be considered my BFF now and he isn't interested in girlie things! :-(

My best friend in high school and college and I went to my family's camp one winter to work on my white tailed deer research project. My brother (1 year younger) was sent along because "girls" shouldn't be alone. What can I say, it was the 60's. We hiked the woods, took pictures, took samples and had a great time. We are both talkers and did a lot of it. When we got into the bunks at night, we still kept talking. Finally about 1 or 2 in the morning my brother begged us to shut up and get some sleep.
Things haven't changed much. We live far apart, but it is just like old times when we get together or call on the phone. We can and do talk for hours.

Friends come and go, but my best friend, my mom is for life. In my twenties my life was busy and relatively full and I didn't have much time for my mom. But in my thirties I went through some tough times and found myself leaning on her and along the way realizing I also had a friend in her.

HI Jaci
What a wonderful post & a nice way to be reminded of how lucky we are.
I am fortunate enough to have friends that are like sisters & my sisters are my friends too. We had a middle sister that died of cancer when she was 18 years old & we vowed to appreciate each other & not sweat the small stuff. Of course we're human & sometimes we do sweat the small stuff but we can usually laugh our way out of it. I'm also proud of the fact that I'm still friends with someone I met when I was 5 & she was 6. She's a musician who's lived around the world but we never lost touch.

Coincidentally, my BFF and I were just discussing our friendship this weekend. We both have differing memories of when exactly we started being friends, but they're both of the third grade. In my mind, she started being my friend when she surreptitiously passed me green grapes during state testing. She remembers when I helped her plant morning glories in eggshells (she likes pointed out that they wilted). We're still thick as thieves today, however, and I wouldn't change it for anything. :)

I met my bff in high school. Although we come from different backgrounds, we're closer than sisters. After many life's up an downs, we have each other to lean on.

I've told you this before, Jaci, but I LOVE Wild, WIcked & Wanton! It's one of my very favorites stories written by you. I love the idea of girlfriends. I personally haven't had very many girlfriends...most of mine were guys. *sheepish smile* I do have one girlfriend who I don't get to see often because of busy schedules--but when we do, it's like we just saw each other. We know we will be there for each other no matter what! Other than her, my go-to is my step-mom and MIL. Weird I know, but they are some cool ladies!!

Hi Jaci :D
wow, what a heartful post - thanks so much!!
I've a younger sister and I can talk with her about everything - and although we are living wide apart we will always have that special bond between us...
wish you all the best,
Ina

I have a few good friends from school that I have remained close to. There are also some people that I met at work that I'm really good friends with even though we've changed jobs, but still manage to chat often.

Hi Jaci, Hi everyone

I love to read about female friendships. That was one of the reasons why I loved Wild Wicked & Wanton. The fact that these 3 women can tell eachother everything and be who they are around each other with total acceptance is incredibly desirable. It is a love that is hard to find and if you have it you are truly blessed. Unfortunately, I have never found a group of girl friends that have loved me and accepted me like that. So, just like anything you desire and haven't found you imagine you have it when you read a great story of freindship. Thank God for that.

I like to read stories where the characters have close friends to rely on. As a reader it tells me more about their personalities and gives more insight in general.

Hi everyone! It's great reading all your bff stories. Whether it's your friends, your mothers, daughters or sisters, having someone to confide in and share the ride of your life with is so important, isn't it?

Thanks for sharing your stories with me. It's great to have friends, isn't it?

I still talk to friends from grade school and high school but I'd have to say my niece is my BFF. We talk about everything.Whenever she needs to talk or advice or just wants to hang out its me she talks too and vice versa. We've always had this special bond that I am truly greatful for. And now that she's had her son, its all trhe more special.

I've been best friends with a group of girls from school, some from 2nd grade on, some from 6th grade on, but somehow managed to stay together for the last oh, 25 or so years! We had several years of not getting together, though we stayed in touch, but lately we've been doing our "Girl's Night Out" about every two or three months. Great time to spend together, and if anything, I'd say we are closer now than ever before.

Infact, we are getting together this Friday night, each of us bringing something to eat (I'm in charge of the important part... brownies!) And we're going to spend the evening hours playing Wii and eating. Who could ask for a better night out than that... oh, forgot the male stripper option. Never mind. *g*

Hi Jaci. My best friends are my sisters, and mom. Its amazing the private things we can talk about without flinching or missing a beat. We're all around the country but manage to keep in touch. We constantly text each other about books we've read and author recommendations. But mostly we talk about sex and kids. And often about the funny things that happen with our DHs. All in all, its good, all of it.

Congrats on BB&B. I can't wait to read it. I enjoyed the comraderie Abby, Blair, and Callie had in Wild, Wicked and Wanton. They remind me so much of me and my sibs growing up.
